Oil giant Sunoco, Inc. has officially started corn ethanol production at Northeast Biofuels, the plant it purchased last year in Volney, NY. When operating at maximum capacity the plant is capable of annually producing 100 million gallons of ethanol, or roughly one fourth of the company's total demand. Although ethanol is currently being produced exclusively for the company's own use, Sunoco company sees potential for future growth as the demand for alternative fuel sources increases.The plant currently employes 60 people in the Town of Volney and buys as much corn as possible from local farmers.
